Sometimes it’s the little things that you don’t think about, that have a big impact on how things operate. That’s what this post is for…to pass along things that we have found helpful.
One of those things has been the “turbie twist”. All the girls were gifted one before we left and it has been a game changer! The big towels don’t have to be so wet from our hair now and the turbie twist towels dry so fast as it is! So for line drying things, it has really made it more efficient!

Another thing we have found extremely helpful are the Brute totes. We had several we used while camping in years past and they held up wonderfully! So we invested in a few more and it has kept organization possible with all of our stuff. We ordered a dozen white ones for us to use for clothes. Elaina made labels for each one, so we could easily identify them. The grey ones are holding anything from kitchen supplies, to wood burning stove supplies, to winter jackets. We have some of both sizes and love them!

Along our journey, we have also enjoyed some special CD’s from friends/family. One is and old time favorite from our dear Mammy and Pots. We have been singing the songs on this for years and I don’t think it will ever get old. It’s called One Voice. The second and third are from some dear friends of ours we have known since before I was married. Literally childhood friends. They are so special and we have quickly grown to love and enjoy every song on these as well! Even Silas and Onna sing along. Truly blesses our heart!

Good sleeping bags has also been extremely helpful on our journey so far. We have a variety of them and they all are 20 degree or colder sleeping bags. It has made it possible to sleep comfortably in the cold weather without having to burn lots of firewood. Definitely a good investment for us! The one pictured below is a double sleeping bag called the “mammoth”. I didn’t think I would enjoy sleeping in a sleeping bag, but let me tell you! It has been wonderful! Both sides zip up if you want and honestly, we haven’t used the sheets and quilt at all on the cold nights. Just hop in the sleeping bag and you are good to go!

We are using our own version of “composting toilets”. We use a 5 gallon bucket, toilet seat, compostable trash bag, and pine shavings. It has worked well. When we get established somewhere we use our “outhouse” and that works well too! We purchased the camping shower from academy a few years ago and transformed it into our outhouse. Just dig a hole about 2 feet deep, set the tripod toilet over the top, and as it is used, kick a little dirt over the hole and it’s ready for the next person! Neither one has been too smelly and as long as it is maintained properly they work great!

Our Joolca is another thing we have used that has made a huge impact on our trip. I’m amazed how well the whole system works. I already did a post on that, but just wanted to mention that we love it!

The camp chef 3 burner stove and 2 burner griddle have made cooking a breeze! We use the griddle and make pancakes, grilled cheese, fajitas, warm up left overs, you name it! I love the huge flat surface! And the burners have allowed plenty of space for the big pots we use to cook in. It comes apart and fits in its own bag. So nice!
